GMC launches ‘War on Waste’ campaign

<p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align:justify"><b>GANGTOK,</b><b>:</b><span style="font-family: &quot;Bookman Old Style&quot;, serif;"> Gangtok Municipal Corporation, in collaboration with GNS Builders, launched the “War on Waste” (WOW) campaign at Lall Bazaar here today.</span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-family:&quot;Bookman Old Style&quot;,serif">The campaign was officially launched by Urban Development minister Bhoj Raj Rai in the presence of Gangtok MLA Delay Namgyal Barfungpa, GMC mayor Nell Bhahadur Chettri, deputy mayor Tshering Palden Bhutia and municipal commissioner Gary Chopel. A cleanliness drive was also launched on the occasion.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-family:&quot;Bookman Old Style&quot;,serif">The initiative includes a 100-day Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign on solid waste management, which will be conducted in all 19 wards of Gangtok on a door-to-door basis, from February 19 to April 30. They will be dedicating two days of every week to each ward.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-family:&quot;Bookman Old Style&quot;,serif">The campaign aims to raise awareness among the common public regarding appropriate waste segregation and responsible waste management.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-family:&quot;Bookman Old Style&quot;,serif">Municipal commissioner Chopel informed that a team of 60 people from GMC and GNS will be going through each ward, informing people about the four waste segregation categories, i.e., wet, dry, sanitary, and special care wastes.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-family:&quot;Bookman Old Style&quot;,serif">Along with the awareness campaign, there will also be an active cleanliness drive. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-family:&quot;Bookman Old Style&quot;,serif">“The WOW Gangtok campaign is an initiative to clean up Gangtok and make it presentable and healthy so that when people see the city, they can express their experience with a single, genuine ‘WOW,’” said Chopel.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-family:&quot;Bookman Old Style&quot;,serif">Addressing the public gathered, minister Bhoj Raj Rai said, “Gangtok is our city, and keeping it clean is a shared responsibility between municipal authorities and citizens.”<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-family:&quot;Bookman Old Style&quot;,serif">The mayor said there will be a particular focus on sensitizing the landlords of the city, urging them to take up the initiative and responsibility to inform and facilitate their tenants with regard to waste management. He also mentioned that the campaign will be setting cameras and informants through each ward, monitoring the waste activities.
