Preparatory meeting for upcoming Municipal Elections 2026

<p><b>GANGTOK, (IPR):</b> State Election Commissioner, Sikkim, K.C. Lepcha chaired a preparatory meeting regarding the upcoming Municipal Elections 2026 at the conference hall of the Fisheries department near Paljor Stadium, Gangtok on Saturday.</p><p>The preparatory meeting was organised by the State Election Commission, Sikkim with the objective of taking preliminary stock of preparedness by the districts for the upcoming Municipal Elections 2026.</p><p>At the commencement of the meeting, State Election Commission secretary Gloria Namchu gave an overview of the upcoming Urban Local Body elections wherein she apprised the gathering about the increase in the number of polling stations in the State and the inclusion of the areas of Soreng and Pakyong as Nagar Panchayats. The number of polling stations in the districts was also apprised to the gathering.</p><p>State Election Commissioner, Sikkim, K.C. Lepcha in his address spoke about the role of the State Election Commission in the Municipal Elections and informed about the important dates pertaining to the preparation of electoral rolls. Further, he cautioned that the State has entered election mode and advised the district officers to take stock of preparedness before the declaration of elections.</p><p>Furthermore, the Commissioner informed that the electoral rolls of the Municipalities will be prepared in coordination with the National Informatics Centre by converting the relevant parts of the electoral rolls of the Legislative Assembly Constituencies into Municipal Wards, for the time being, by the Municipal Electoral Registration Officers of the districts in the following manner:</p><p>1. Preparedness of electoral rolls preparation of software and draft electoral rolls: February 9, 2026</p><p>2. Segregation of ward wise electoral rolls from Assembly electoral rolls: February 10 to 17, 2026</p><p>3. Data entry of manuscripts in the districts: February 18 to 24, 2026</p><p>4. Draft publication of electoral rolls: February 25, 2026</p><p>5. Filing of claims and objections: February 26 to March 2, 2026</p><p>6. Disposal of claims and objections: March 3 to 9, 2026</p><p>7. Printing and final publication of electoral rolls: March 18, 2026</p><p>The Commissioner also briefed about new changes brought in Gangtok district wherein the Burtuk Ward has been separated into two wards. Likewise, Lower Sichey Ward will be bifurcated into two distinct wards. It was further informed that the outer boundaries of Pipal Dara Ward have been rearranged in the Singtam Nagar Panchayat.</p><p>In addition, the Commissioner informed that the number of polling stations has increased from 89 to 120 and the number of wards has increased from 51 to 63 in the State of Sikkim.</p><p>An interactive session between the heads of the districts and senior officers of the State Election Commission was held wherein preparedness of the districts in conducting the Municipal Elections was discussed at length.</p><p>The meeting was attended by District Collectors, Superintendents of Police, Additional District Collectors, Sub Divisional Magistrates, Municipal Executive Officers and senior officers from various line departments.</p><div><br></div>
