GANGTOK, : The authorities at STNM Hospital, Gangtok have informed that the internal water supply at the government-run hospital was restored at around quarter to three pm on Tuesday.

A video had surfaced on social media where a concerned citizen highlighted the severe inconvenience due to the acute shortage of water supply within the 1000- bedded hospital premises. In the video, he stated that his grandfather was admitted in STNM Hospital for the past two weeks, and there had been a shortage of water supply for a week, with Monday being the worst of all the days. In the video he showed that the water taps had run dry and the unhygienic condition of the hospital washrooms.

The concerned citizen had asked why the hospital authorities and the PHE department had not taken any action, when the water supply was disrupted for 13 to 14 hours straight, yesterday. Stating that the patients are facing problems, he had also urged the State government to take action against those mismanaging.

Following this, SIKKIM EXPRESS reached out to STNM PD and AMS-1 Dr. Suresh Kumar Rasaily, who informed that the internal water supply was restored at the hospital premises around quarter to three pm today.

“The two motor pumps, along with the reserve motor pump, broke down at the same time at night. When two motors broke, we had to run the reserve pump. The reserve pump had been idle for a long time, so when we started it around 2 am in the morning, that also failed. It took time to repair as we couldn’t get its parts in Gangtok, which was the main problem. Now it is fully restored,” he said.

Dr. Rasaily informed that two additional new pumps will be added to the water supply at STNM Hospital soon.

When asked about the accusations about water shortage for a week, which was stated in the video, the hospital authorities denied it and said, “Water has been there but the demand is so high. At Yatri Niwas, four or five people stay for one patient, when water per head usage comes into play. The relatives of patients wash clothes, five people take showers. How will we sustain the hospital like that? People don’t understand. Today upon inspection of the washrooms, all taps were open. There has to be some responsibility from the public too, instead of blaming the hospital authorities and PHE department. It was a motor issue. Even cars break down, and the motors here are running for ages. It broke down once earlier in January 2022. It was repaired and it was functional until it broke down recently.”

SIKKIM EXPRESS also reached out to PHE secretary Shailendra Sharma, who clarified that the water crisis at STNM Hospital was an internal problem at the hospital, as PHE department has been providing access to water continuously from their end. He informed that he had a conversation with the STNM Hospital authorities, who informed about the breakage of the motor pumps. “One pump of theirs had been broken for about 12 to 15 days. While trying to repair it, the others broke down too, including the reserve motor pump, leading to the scarcity of water.”
