<p class="MsoNoSpacing"><b><span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">GANGTOK, :</span></b><span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif""> BJP Rajya Sabha MP Seema Dwivedi on Sunday alleged that the failure to pass Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, known as Nari Shakti VandanAdhiniyam, in Lok Sabhaduring the recent special session of Parliament has delayed women’s reservation by another decade.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">Addressing a press conference in Gangtok, Dwivedi said the demand for 33 per cent reservation for women has persisted for decades and that Women's Reservation Act was passed in 2023 with a clear majority under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.The Women’s Reservation Act 2023came into force on April 16, 2026, according to the Central government notification.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">However, Dwivedi said, the Act required an amendment, a census and delimitation exercise to take effect.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">She said the government intended to operationalise the reservation by 2029 and the special session was held was to address the issues like census and delimitation.However, she alleged that opposition parties derailed the proceedings by shifting the focus to casteand religion-based reservations.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">“The opposition deliberately diverted the main agenda. They lacked both intent and commitment to ensure justice for women,” Dwivedi said, adding that the failure of the measure had hurt the aspirations of women across the country.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">She further criticised opposition parties for “celebrating” the outcome after the vote, terming it insensitive to the sentiments of women.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">BJYM national vice-president Neha Joshi, who was also present, said women in the country have been waiting for reservation for over three decades and that repeated attempts to pass the measure have not succeeded.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">“This was the eighth attempt. The opportunity to secure 33 per cent reservation by 2029 now appears to have been pushed further,” she said, alleging that the opposition ignored assurances given by the Union Home Minister during the session.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">Joshi also thanked Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and Deputy Speaker Raj Kumari Thapa for organising a rally in support of the legislation.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p> </p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">Leaders of the BJP MahilaMorcha, BJYM and other party functionaries were present at the press conference.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
