<span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">GANGTOK,: “We did not raise any political issues with the Prime Minister as he was our guest. We will instead go to Delhi with our full team and submit our memorandum there,” said Chief Minister Prem SinghTamang-Golay on Tuesday, underlining the State government’s decision during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

<span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">The anticipation among the masses in Sikkim was that the Prime Minister will address many long pending political demands of the State while speaking at Paljor Stadium. Those demands being the long pending Limboo-Tamang seat reservation in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, tribal status for the 12 left-out communities of the State, and bringing 17th Karmapa to Sikkim. However, the Prime Minister made no reference with regards to these long pending demands of Sikkim in his speech.

<span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">Chief Minister’s political secretary Bikash Basnet gave a similar reasoning. He said, “Several long-standing demands, including infrastructure-related projects, were addressed by the Prime Minister. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay shares a strong working relationship with the Central Government, particularly with the Prime Minister, which has helped in getting the State’s demands fulfilled. The NDA government has been responsive to the demands raised by the people of Sikkim and the State government, and I am confident that this support will continue in the future. We hope that more projects would be sanctioned for Sikkim following the visit”.

<span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">Sikkim BJP yuvamorcha president LalitPokhrel Sharma also commented on why the Prime Minister didn't address the long pending issues.

<span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">“Some issues are raised by different parties, but such matters are discussed and addressed in Parliament. The Prime Minister cannot speak about every local issue in a public address. These concerns are already known and are being raised by elected representatives, including Members of Parliament.”

<span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">He added, “At present, the focus was on celebrating 50 years of Sikkim’s Statehood and the associated spirit of pride and unity. Issues that require legislative action will be taken up in Parliament and resolved through proper procedures, as seen in past examples like the women’s reservation bill”.

<span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">“There are also demands related to specific communities and local concerns, including reservation and other matters. The Prime Minister is aware of these issues, and we have faith that they will be addressed in due course”, said Sharma.

<span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">Meanwhile, the Chief Minister expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for attending the closing ceremony of Sikkim’s Golden Jubilee celebrations despite challenging weather conditions. “If helicopter travel was not possible due to bad weather, he said he would come to Sikkim under any circumstances-even by road. This is historic, as no Prime Minister had done this before in such a situation,” he said.

<span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">Golay described the two-day programme as a complete success, highlighting the roadshow and the dedication ceremony as key events that saw enthusiastic public participation. He thanked citizens, NGOs, government employees, and all those involved in organising the celebrations.

<span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">Praising the cultural segment, Golay said local artists delivered impressive performances reflecting unity and the spirit of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.” He noted that their efforts added depth and meaning to the Golden Jubilee event.

<span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">On development, the Chief Minister emphasised strong coordination between the Centre and the State. He said several ongoing projects are being jointly supported and that this partnership will continue to be strengthened, aligned with national priorities including security and the vision of a developed India by 2047.

<span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">Later in a social media post, the Chief Minister expressed his distinct honour and immense pride to join the Prime Minister at the grand closing ceremony commemorating 50 glorious years of Sikkim’s Statehood at Paljor Stadium.

<span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">On this historic occasion, the Prime Minister virtually inaugurated a series of transformative projects across the State, including the Helen Lepcha Medical College, the Mini Secretariat, the Eco-Tourism Pilgrimage Complex at Dodak, and the Administrative Block of the NetajiSubhas Chandra Bose Centre of Excellence. He also laid the foundation stones for several key initiatives, such as a 100-bed Ayurveda Hospital, the Eco-Pilgrimage Complex at Silnon, a Public Utility Centre, and the comprehensive rehabilitation of the sewage system, among others.

<span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">“These landmark initiatives mark a significant stride in strengthening Sikkim’s infrastructure, healthcare ecosystem, and sustainability efforts, laying a strong foundation for a brighter, more resilient, and prosperous future for our people,” said Golay.

<span lang="EN-IN" style="font-family:"Bookman Old Style","serif"">
