GMC rolls out ‘Governance at Doorstep’ programme

<p class="MsoNoSpacing"><strong>GANGTOK,:</strong><strong><span style="font-family:&quot;Bookman Old Style&quot;,serif; mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin;font-weight:normal; mso-bidi-font-weight:bold"> Gangtok Municipal Corporation rolled out the ‘Governance at Doorstep’ programme today, starting with Gangtok constituency, in the presence of Gangtok MLA Delay Namgyal Barfungpa, Gangtok mayor Tshering Palden Bhutia, municipal commissioner Gary Chopel, and councillors from the wards under Gangtok constituency.</span></strong><span style="font-family:&quot;Bookman Old Style&quot;,serif"><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span style="font-family:&quot;Bookman Old Style&quot;,serif">MLA Delay Namgyal Barfungpa said that the primary objective of the initiative is to facilitate ease of doing business by enabling traders in the Gangtok constituency to address issues related to licence applications, renewals, and waste management through the kiosk. He also assured that efforts would be made to involve other departments in conducting similar exercises in the near future.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span style="font-family:&quot;Bookman Old Style&quot;,serif">Speaking to the media, mayor Tshering Palden said that the programme, envisioned by the Chief Minister, aims to bring the GMC to the doorsteps of the public, allowing residents to raise their grievances and have their issues addressed. She added that the initiative would be implemented across all wards under the GMC. “The Chief Minister, PS Tamang, started this model of governance by taking the government to the doorsteps of the people through visits to remote constituencies. We felt that this initiative of the Chief Minister should also be implemented in urban areas,” the mayor said.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span style="font-family:&quot;Bookman Old Style&quot;,serif">Municipal commissioner Gary Chopel informed that various sections of the municipality, including the licence section, town planning section, solid waste management section, and accounts section, had been stationed at the camp. The section responsible for central government schemes was also present to enable the public to avail themselves of the benefits offered under these schemes. “The Governance at Doorstep programme helps the public overcome the mental blockade of visiting the GMC office. It enables people to resolve issues related to various services of the Municipal Corporation right at their doorstep,” he added.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"> </p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span style="font-family:&quot;Bookman Old Style&quot;,serif">The Governance at Doorstep kiosk will be operational for two days in each ward. The kiosk will remain open at MG Marg on Monday and Tuesday.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
